This month we are lucky to have our resident GP, specialising in Dermatology, Dr Pippa share how you can ‘Fire Up Your Skincare with Vitamin C’.

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants there is for your skin. Oxidisation is a reaction caused by the sun, where free radicals (lone particles) are produced, which can cause damage within the skin cells. Vitamin C helps to prevent oxidisation, & fight this damage. 

What are the Benefits of Vitamin C in skincare?

Due to this antioxidant property, it can help with:

  • Sun Protection

  • Reducing Sun Damage

  • Reducing Signs of Ageing

  • Including Fine Lines & Wrinkles

  • Enhancing Collagen Synthesis

  • Helping to Plump the Skin

  • And Helping to Brighten

Vitamin C also has a skin-lightening property, meaning it can aid in anti-pigmentation, reducing dark sun spots, as well as lifting post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, including acne related redness.

How do You Use Vitamin C?

Start by purchasing lower strengths in creams & moisturiser. Patch test first & if no reaction start with applying a couple of times a week. This can then be built up, to perhaps higher concentrations & serums. It can also be used as a “lift” for your skin in a mask or serum weekly.

Are There Any Cautions? 

Side effects can include: skin irritation & photo-sensitivity. If applied in the morning do also wear a sunscreen. It is also recommended you do a patch test prior to use & start with lower strength concentrations.
