MINDFULNESS IN NATURE

"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”

Albert Einstein

Exploring mindfulness in nature nourishes both us and the environment as we move through it. It helps us to feel more connected and present, compelling us to simplify our thoughts and focus on what’s right in front of us.

We recently hosted a Re-Wilding Retreat at the beautiful Cabilla (set within 1000 acres of ancient woodlands and temperate rainforest). It was here that we really tuned in to the healing power of nature and how it can support us to be truly present in our surroundings. We provided the guests with tips for maximising the benefits of being in nature and felt that this guide could be beneficial you (our members!). See our top tips below and let us know how you get on. Remember to stay safe and always let someone know where you are headed.

Top Tips for exploring mindfulness in nature

  1. Pack a notepad and a pen and go for a walk in nature (e.g. the woods, along the river, by the sea, through the fields). Try and choose a location that is natural and free from human distraction.

  2. Find a place to rest for a while. Either seated or standing, take a moment to ground into the earth beneath you. Feel that connection and take 5 cleansing breaths.

  3. Move through your senses to explore the space. What can you see, hear, smell and touch? Spend some time taking it all in.

  4. Notice the energies present within and around you. Spend time considering what energies are present within the landscape and within you. For example this could include: movement and stillness, growth and rest, healing and repair.

  5. Take pen to paper. Find a comfortable place to rest and spend some time journaling. Let your thoughts flow free, write down any words that come to mind, doodle or use any of the following prompts: ‘Here in the naturalworld I feel…’, ‘One seed of intention I would like to plant here is…’, ‘Here in the natural world, I feel connected to/inspired by…’

  6. Close your practice - Before you leave, root yourself to the ground once more, taking 5 cleansing breaths. Be grateful for giving yourself this time.
