BOOST YOUR MENTAL HEALTH: THE POWER OF MOVEMENT
In today's fast-paced world, taking care of our mental health is more important than ever. While there are many strategies to improve our well-being, one often overlooked method is simply moving more. Incorporating regular physical activity into your routine can have a profound impact on your mental health, helping to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall happiness.
Find out more about how movement is the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week and how you can celebrate by joining us for our Sweat + Stretch event this May.
Mental Health Awareness Week
Monday 13th May marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme for this year is “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”. Encouraging everyone to find moments for movement every day. This could be as simple as going for a walk (whilst enjoying one of our new meditations), dancing around your kitchen to your playlist, joining Evelyn for our live strength class, or starting your day with a gentle strength. It all counts!
Top Tips for Moving for Your Mental Health
Here are some effective ways to harness the power of movement to enhance your mental well-being:
Start Small and Build Momentum: If you're new to exercise, don't feel overwhelmed by trying to do too much too soon. Start with small, achievable goals, such as taking a short walk around your neighborhood or doing a quick workout at home. As you build momentum and confidence, gradually increase the duration and intensity of your activities.
Find Activities You Enjoy: Exercise doesn't have to be a chore. Choose activities that you genuinely enjoy, whether it's dancing, hiking, swimming, or playing a sport. When you find activities that are fun and engaging, you're more likely to stick with them over the long term, leading to greater mental health benefits.
Prioritise Consistency Over Intensity: Consistency is key when it comes to reaping the mental health benefits of exercise. Aim for regular, moderate-intensity activity throughout the week rather than sporadic, intense workouts. Even just 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week can make a significant difference in your mood and well-being.
Connect with Nature: Spending time outdoors has been shown to have numerous mental health benefits, including reduced stress and improved mood. Take advantage of nature's healing powers by incorporating outdoor activities into your exercise routine, such as hiking, biking, or simply going for a walk in the park.
Practice Mindfulness During Movement: Use exercise as an opportunity to practice mindfulness by paying attention to your body and surroundings. Focus on the sensations of movement, the rhythm of your breath, and the sights and sounds around you. Mindful movement can help quiet the mind, reduce anxiety, and enhance feelings of calm and relaxation.
Engage in Social Activities: Exercise can also be a great way to connect with others and build social support networks, which are essential for maintaining good mental health. Join a group fitness class (see details on our Sweat + Stretch event below), participate in team sports, or simply invite a friend to join you for a walk or workout session.
Celebrate Your Progress: Finally, remember to celebrate your progress and achievements along the way. Whether it's reaching a fitness milestone, completing a challenging workout, or simply feeling more energized and positive, take time to acknowledge and celebrate your successes. Positive reinforcement can help motivate you to continue moving forward on your mental health journey.
