STAYING ACTIVE DURING THE SUMMER
We all know the benefits (both physical and mental) of maintaining active style (in fact the NHS advise that we all carry out 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise). However, we recognise that it can be harder to stick to our usual routine in the summer months, particularly with the warmer weather (now that it has finally arrived!)
It’s important to not always see change as a negative and instead be open to new opportunities. That’s why this month, we’ve asked our team of Wellness Experts to share their top tips for staying physically active this summer:
Mix Up Your Routine - Rather than fighting to stick to a routine that is unattainable during the summer months (particularly, if you have children who need entertaining during the holidays), mix it up and incorporate outdoor pursuits (that don’t feel like a workout), and can involve the whole family, into your week.
“Don’t tie yourself to a routine if that is not available to you over the summer. Let movement be part of your summer adventure - take friends hiking, running, go swimming in the sea, dance around your garden and slot in some quiet time for yoga whenever you can. Take the pressure off and enjoy.”

Take Your Workout Outside - Find inspiration in your workout environment and take your workout outside. This will increase your level of serotonin, having a positive impact on your mood. Plus your body will actually work harder as it responds to different terrains, obstacles and weather conditions.
We recommend catching up on the on-demand library and taking the class outside. Just make sure you find a shady spot, wear sun protection and stay hydrated. If you’re based on the Island, there are lots of opportunities to make the most of the great outdoors with the B+G team
Exercise first thing - Try working out earlier in the day. This is when your energy is at its highest and when the temperatures are the coolest. Not only will have more energy to exercise, but it will also give you more energy throughout the day. Search ‘morning’ from our extensive on-demand library and discover all the classes made for getting you going in the AM!
Make your own summer playlist - Music can help you stay motivated and focused before and during your workout but often playlists can get stale and overplayed. Use this as an opportunity to create a new playlist, full of motivating summer tunes. Give it a go and notice what music works for you - you’ll find it easier to stick to a routine and keep moving when your favourite songs are playing! Workout with a friend - Invite a friend to workout and make it a social occasion. This will increase levels of accountability - you’re less likely to cancel as you won’t want to let your friend down. Read our recent blog post on why working out with a buddy is better HERE.
“I recommend making it a social event. So rather than just meeting a friend for a workout, why don’t you invite them for a workout and a brunch. This way you have something nice to look forward, it’s an opportunity to catch-up with your friend, and it will ensure you are adequately fuelled post workout. There are lots of delicious prepare the night before brunch options on the Balanced Life Blog!”
