POCKET GUIDE TO ISLE OF WIGHT BEACHES

With sunnier days on the horizon, this month we wanted to share our Pocket Guide to Isle of Wight Beaches. From our favourite sunset spots, hidden gem, beach refreshments, and best beaches for SUP yoga, the Isle of Wight really does have it all.

Best Spot for Beach Yoga - Compton Beach

Compton Beach is a two mile stretch of golden sand on the west of the island and the location of our popular morning and sunset yoga sessions. Roll your mat out, enjoy the sound of the waves lapping along the beach whilst looking out to the white chalk cliffs of Freshwater in the distance. Below, Co-Founder and Yoga Teacher Jenny shares why she believes Compton Beach is the best spot for Beach Yoga:

“Nothing beats the adventure of walking down those steps, the sand in your toes, the sound of the waves as you flow on your mat and the feeling of being totally immersed in mother natures wonder. Doing beach yoga has a way of just putting everything else in life just into perspective and its a magical experience.”

You can join Jenny and the rest of the Balance + Glo team on Compton Beach for Beach Yoga from May.

The shallow bay means it’s also a popular spot for surfers. During the winter months, when the weather isn’t suitable for yoga, we love pulling up in the car park with a hot drink and watching the waves. And if you’re lucky, at low tide you may spot some dinosaur footprints printed into the rocks.

Best Hidden Gem - Steephill Cove

Steephill Cove in Ventnor is an idyllic fishing cove that can only be accessed via foot, either walk from the nearby Botanical Gardens or from Ventnor Esplanade along the costal path (takes approximately 20 minutes). The later is Co-Founder Evelyn’s favourite.

“Every time I turn into the cove it’s beauty surprises me. You really can’t beat it on a sunny day (especially as Ventnor enjoys warmer weather than elsewhere on the island thanks to it’s microclimate). I instantly feel relaxed and love it’s simplicity. I love taking family and friends here when they are visiting, as they never expect to find this little cove just off the coastal path.”

The cove has a handful of cottages, beach huts and small cafes (including the Crab Shed with it’s famous Crab Pasties).  It’s the perfect spot to relax, get away from the hustle and bustle, and enjoy a good book. It’s clear waters are safe for swimming and the rock pools offers a chance for adventure.

Best Spot for Stand-Up PaddleBoarding - Colwell Bay

Colwell Bay, in Freshwater, with it’s calm, crystal clear waters make it the perfect spot for Stand Up Paddleboarding. Head out on your board and enjoy panoramic views across the Solent to Hurst Castle and Fort Albert.

If you’re looking for a SUP Board, make sure you check out our favourite island-born board, Freshwater Bay Paddleboard Company, and be sure to join us this Summer for SUP Yoga (dates coming soon).

Best Beach Sunset - Gurnard Green

Want a special spot to finish the day on the island, you can’t go wrong with an evening picnic on Gurnard Green watching the sun go down. The green offers spectacular views across the Solent. Sailing boats and people out on SUP boards, provide dreamy silhouettes.

“Some of my favourite nights on the island, have been spent on Gurnard Green. It’s the simple things. Sharing a picnic blanket with friends, maybe a cheeky glass of wine, and a picnic dinner. It’s a pinch me moment every time.”

Evelyn Joyce, Co-Founder

Want a sundowner, head to the Woodvale Pub if you’re lucky enough to grab a table or enjoy a pizza from Captain Pizza which offers deliveries to the Green over the Summer months.

Best Beach Refreshments - Reeth Bay and Sandown

It was too difficult to choose between these two beaches with their delicious foodie offerings (can you tell resident foodie Evelyn wrote this blog article!).

Reeth Bay

Reeth Bay, Niton, is just around the corner from the island’s most southerly point (St Catherine’s). It is very picturesque, with the beach itself consisting of predominately sand and pebbles.

“It is peaceful, a very good sun trap (just don’t forget your SPF) and a great location for spotting seals. And it’s home to one of my favourite island eateries.”

Dr Pippa, Skin Care Specialist

Smoothie Bowl at Fins

The True Food Kitchen Cafe is at the southerly end of the bay. It prides itself of offering simple, delicious food. Enjoy alfresco, relaxed dinning with daily specials featuring freshly caught fish, as well as innovative plant-based dishes, mouthwatering bao buns and the freshest of poke bowls. The only downside is you’ll have to wait till it opens in May!

Sandown Beach

Sandown Promenade is home to two of our favourite beach side cafes - Fins and Tradewinds Beach Cafe. Fins is a great spot for brunch offering an array of smoothie bowls (with delicious homemade granola) and of course avocado on toast. Tradewinds brings all the tropical vibes with açai bowls you’ll want to dive straight into, with dishes inspired by the owners’ previous home in Hawaii. Be sure to check them both out.
