THE SELF RESET: JOURNALING

This September at Balance + Glo is all about “The Self Reset”, a 30-day challenge designed to re-ignite your daily rituals as we head into a new season. It is a holistic challenge combined of strength, yoga, meditation, breathwork, and self-care tools. One of these self-development tools is journaling.

How to journal

Journaling is simply picking up a pen and writing your thoughts down on paper. Journaling can be guided by prompts or just be a stream of consciousness spilling out onto the page. It is a way of working through your emotions, blockages and troubles. It is important to remember there is no correct way to journal. It is a judgement free zone where you give yourself the space and compassion to lay it all out.

Don’t know where to start? Here’s some prompts from Day 6 of The Self Reset could help you:

  • Write down five activities/situations that truly light you up

  • Write down five activities that dim you down

  • What qualities are you calling into your life?

  • What are you letting go?

A successful habit pattern is formed from a place of authenticity and a real sense of doing it for ourselves rather than perhaps imitating something we think we should be doing. The process of journaling can help uncover areas of resistance to change and understand what it is that you want.

Reflection, observation + connection

Journaling can give perspective and distance on something that felt overwhelming in your mind. You may have heard the phrase “a problem shared is a problem halved”, now of course you don’t get verbal “advice” from words on a page but you gain the ability to be analytical of your own thoughts. It’s remarkable how different your ruminations feel once they are outside your mind – give it a go!

Improve communication

Once you get used to writing how you feel down on paper purely for your eyes only it can become easier to communicate in other areas of your life. If something has already been articulated, then often the second time it can be communicated with balance and perspective.
