Summer’s longer days, brighter sunshine and warmer temps tend to help us enjoy improved mood, better diet and stronger fitness habits, but the busier days and excessive BBQ invites can also lead to more stress, dehydration and sun damage!

So to keep you in tip top condition we’ve asked our experts for their summer-specific wellness tips and lifestyle habits to keep in mind for healthy summertime living. Check it out below:

  1. Keep Hydrated

Proper hydration is important any time of year (the human body is about two-thirds water, and we need it for all bodily functioning!)—but it’s especially important in the summertime sun and heat.

In general, you’ll want to drink about two-thirds of your body weight in ounces of water each day. And, remember to boost your water take if you spend time in the heat—especially exercising or exerting yourself in the heat. Balance + Glo Yoga teacher Emma H suggests incorporating water rich fruits and veg like watermelon and lime daily to give you a hydration boost.

2. Eat Seasonally

Eating fruit and veg that are ripe and local means they are brimming with vitamins and minerals. Plus they don't have very far to get to you (even better if they are homegrown) which means you are also doing your bit for sustainability too (less packaging, less preservatives, less distance to travel).

This month Balance + Glo Co founder and Head of Fitness Evelyn recommends trying beetroot, carrot, courgettes, cucumber, new potatoes strawberries and raspberries. She suggests thinking seasonal salads, delicious smoothies and overnight oat pots. Head over to the blog for her most recent recipe inspo.

3. Be Sun Smart

Our resident skincare specialist and GP Doctor Pippa suggests being sun smart no matter the weather (or in fact the time of year!). Cumulative sun and UV light damage to your skin can be the cause of skin cancer, so she suggests taking extra precautions this summer by wearing SPF 30, donning a summer hat, sunglasses and protective clothing.

Dr Pippa also suggests seeking shade in the midday sun when you can to stay out of the hottest and most intense sunshine of the day.

4. Move When it Feels Good (maybe not in peak sunshine time!)

Added heat (even if it’s dry heat!) can make exercise uncomfortable in the summer months. Try getting some exercise in the morning hours before the sun is at its peak. Or break up your day and go for shorter walk breaks throughout your day.

Co founder and Head of Yoga Jenny suggests trying an early morning yoga or hiit class to start your day when it’s a little cooler? Join a LIVE session or find one that suits you on the Online Studio On Demand Library (there’s over 500 to choose from)

5. Get Your Rest

Routines may vary with all those exciting summer events but still aim to get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Hot night?! Keep your room cool and shades pulled to help make your sleep more comfortable.

Why not wind down with a evening Yoga Nidra or Meditation. You can also try out Balance + Glo yoga teacher Vicky’s yang to yin class on the On Demand Library to ensure a great nights sleep.
